Region of Waterloo – Heat Supports

Available to ontario Works Recipients

Ontario Works Supports During Extreme Heat

As temperatures continue to rise across Waterloo Region, Ontario Works has introduced changes to help support participants experiencing the impacts of extreme heat.
These changes recognize extreme heat as a growing public health and health equity issue and aim to reduce barriers to accessing cooling during the summer months.
Ontario Works participants are encouraged to contact their Ontario Works Caseworker directly to discuss their circumstances and available supports.

Air Conditioner Support

Effective May 15th, 2026, Ontario Works participants may be eligible for discretionary benefits up to $350.00 to assist with the purchase of a portable or window air conditioning unit.
To improve access to this support, participants are no longer required to provide a doctor’s note or receipts when requesting this benefit. Requests will be reviewed based on individual circumstances and participant need.

Transportation During Heat Events

OOntario Works participants who need to access cooling spaces are eligible for transportation supports through Medical Travel & Transportation to access the most appropriate and affordable means of transit to the designated cooling spaces.
