Bridgeport United Legacy Gift of $125,000 to Support Community-Led Programming at Waterloo Wayside

WATERLOO, ON – Waterloo Wayside is pleased to announce a foundational $125,000 gift from the legacy of Bridgeport United Church. This investment ensures that nearly two centuries of community service in Bridgeport continue through local programs and partnerships managed by Waterloo Wayside. Since 1839, the Bridgeport congregation has been known for a “hands-on” approach to community needs—from building their own sanctuary during the Depression to serving as a local hub for furniture and clothing distribution during the 1974 flood.

Waterloo Wayside, a social venture launched under the United Church of Canada’s oversight, operates as an inclusive community hub. The organization follows a “strengths-based” approach to community work. Rather than focusing on what a neighbourhood lacks, this model looks at the existing talents of residents, the history of local groups, and the physical spaces available to create sustainable, neighbour-led solutions. By moving these funds into active programming, Wayside honours the Bridgeport tradition of stewardship by turning historic resources into modern opportunities for connection.

“We are so grateful to the people of Bridgeport United for this gift,” says David Petro, Chair of the Board at Waterloo Wayside. “Looking back at their 187-year history, you see a group that always stepped up to help their neighbours. At Wayside, we believe the best way to help a community is to build on the strengths it already has, and this gift is a massive foundational asset. This $125,000 is a huge boost that helps us stay focused on our programming and making sure our space remains a useful resource for everyone in Waterloo. We want the members of Bridgeport to know their legacy is in good hands and is already getting to work.”
