About Waterloo Wayside

Waterloo Wayside is launching a fully funded, two-day after-school initiative this October for MacGregor Senior Public School students. The program features a Cooking Club on Mondays and targeted math support using the JUMP Math framework on both Mondays and Thursdays.

We are seeking a dynamic certified educator—ideally a current Grade 7 or 8 teacher from the MacGregor community—to serve as our Math Instructional Lead.

To respect your time and expertise, this position is strictly instructional and in support of the JUMP Math program. Waterloo Wayside provides a dedicated on-site Program Coordinator who manages all student registrations, attendance, volunteer recruitment, training, and dismissal/walk-over logistics. Your sole focus is delivering high-quality math support alongside a robust team of volunteers, which includes local technology professionals and university students providing 1:1 and small-group breakout mentoring. Registration for the program will be capped at 20 students.

Note: Participation in the Cooking Club is optional and a dedicated person will be leading that programming.

Key Responsibilities

  • Instructional Leadership: Lead a small cohort of MacGregor Grade 7 and 8 students through targeted math sessions (1 hour on Mondays, 1.5 hours on Thursdays) using the structured JUMP Math curriculum.
  • Volunteer Mentorship: Guide and direct a team of university students and local tech sector volunteers who will provide small-group breakout support during the sessions.
  • Curriculum Connection: Act as an informal liaison with daytime math teachers to ensure after-school tutoring concepts directly reinforce current classroom learning.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certification (Intermediate qualifications) or current enrollment in a Faculty of Education program preferred.
  • Experience teaching or supporting the Grade 7/8 Ontario Mathematics Curriculum.
  • Strong classroom management skills and a passion for boosting confidence in reluctant learners.
  • Familiarity with, or a willingness to be trained in, JUMP Math resources.
  • Police Check: A valid and current Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) is strictly required due to direct engagement with youth and marginalized groups.
